Wow thx torn for the great comment. Glad you enjoyed it. Hope to find time and inspiration to make another track. I got over not rushing. Taking some distance and time will hopefully do wonders. I know it will, I've hit that wall many times. Apparently me being creative and good in the job means I can't do that for my music. So if I make a real good track you'll know I didn't deliver on the job ;) anyway thx respect and many grts ;)

Well if I'm doing something Complextro like, yes I'm probably going to start with a ripping bass sequence. :P

    Uprising

@Syntax i agree i do that a lot too since pads will pretty much dictate the coarse of your melody and your melody will show you where to drop your bass wobbles in dub step .,. i usually go with a different method when doing chill out tracks and start with a beat and bass when doing dance type tracks

I'll even take a go at this.
I tend to start with the pad, I figure if I can get a good, solid pad, people will ignore the bad quality of the rest of the track. :P Then comes bass to compliment the pad, if I have a cold pad I want a nice hard bass so it's more prominent, with warm pads I just want a deeper bass to compliment the pad. Only then do I decide what genre and tempo I'm going to do. Melody comes from whatever the pad demands. >:D

Other times I say screw it and throw notes on the note track and figure I'll find a way to make them work.....I do this more often than I would like to admit ;)

Again if I'm serious, I will alternate between knowledge and ear to come up with some ideas that work. Key things I look for are voicing, EQing, sound design... I'm not perfect or professional, but I do like to also try to keep voice leading in mind throughout so that my chords/changes don't feel forced .

Since everyone's writing their method, I'll note mine. I have varied methods of working. I often put together a dummy drum track just to get started. I then typically try to work out some kind of bass flow whether it's a single funk rhythm or progressing bass. I don't worry about whether the bass is playing the roots of any chords typically. If I'm being serious, I'll then extrapolate some ideas for chord/scale structures based on the flow I started with the bass.

I usually make the lead an octave or 2 higher than the bass in the same key too, so it sounds good together, or even follow the bassline notes but up an octave. Or you can have it harmonize by moving through the fifths, which I forgot to post;) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_of_fifths

starting with bass and drums is a very good technique, they lay the foundation for the track ad can make putting the rest in order easy. Every now and then starting with a lead isnt bad either...

  32. madscientistmike

    madscientistmike

I usually start with drums, then bass, then lead, then add vocal, but it varies every time and I tend to experiment with different approaches.SBD check out this wiki page, I use the circle of fifths (it's stuck on the wall in the studio here) often when trying to create my own scales or figure out what note should come next. I know a bunch of chords and scales for guitar and I translate them to piano when I need a chord or thicker sound.

...in order; step 1: initial sound, step 2: recording, step 3: structure, step 4: mixdown, step 5: EQing...
For best results, following the order is essential, now and then i can put one of the later step first, although the EQ should ALWAYS be done at the end to maximize its usage after you have everything set up and running

@southbronx: i go down a similar road, i can get an idea from out of nowhere and, about 70% of the time, i know what i want to do and how. I DO however follow a simple 5 step process to make my music...its not the law by any means but its very useful...

    SouthBronxDen

My music(sic) starts with a bass line in my head and since i have no musical training I use the base drum to chart what i want the bass notes to be, and then i try out some chords and try to use chords of the same family...very poorly most of the time.
