So I am working with a brilliant vocalist, who is also a good writer. He asked me to help him develop a track. What he showed me is already laid out quite well, and to me the vocals pretty much show what is needed. He had a kick drum part through the whole thing. I added some drum parts on the chorus. He liked it. I added a solo cello on a lower part in the dynamics. He liked that. I added some strummed acoustic guitar on the chorus. He liked that. I added some electric guitar leads. He liked that.
All of what I added was based on what I was hearing in his vocal arrangement. If the vocals are good, they will indicate (or dictate) what is needed in the arrangement. THAT is why i say I like to produce from the vocals out. Being a drummer I am not usually one to go for dance music, but the vocals are so compelling in this I went for it. Divism is a great artist, and this vocal arrangement speaks to me. Have a listen: (link is only visible to registered users)
