sorry for clickbaity title, because it doesn't quite encapsulate everything i am going to say here.
so, ive been on this site for a little while, bout 2 years, n have been making beats for a couple years more than that... anyone who talks to me on here knows my love for the original drum/drill and bass/jungle/breakbeat/darkcore+ragga scene from around 1992 to 1997, with labels like moving shadow (deep blue, blame, omni trio, 2 bad mice), creative wax (alex reece, wax doctor/bukem, goldie) and artists like j magik, 4hero, tom and jerry, just to scratch the surface of the many many amazing djs from that time that have molded my music style now-
my point being- partly- i would like to meet more people who even happen to recognize the people+culture i just mentioned, and work with them!! it seems that the small drum and bass/jungle scene on audiotool is more oriented to the new wave of "ps1 jungle" or "n64 atmospheric/" pseudo genre that emerged post-pandemic on youtube through huge playlists featuring people like dj peshay, bukem (again,) chameleon, voyager, you know, the "intelligent, atmospheric" kind of niche,
which, undoubtedly, i do love, but that is not the kind of the drum and bass that i am invested in nor the type i make, as i find it a little too easy to create and overall a little too overdone now.
another problem i face is the bass in drum and bass, which, as i've seen, is jokingly referred to as drum and mids (lol) now, due to the also oversaturated "breakcore" scene that sewerslvt/cynthoni, blksmiith (or however you spell his name) and a couple others, who, while amazing in their own right, unintentionally recreated and made a, slightly, obnoxious echo chamber of (insert piano melody), (insert anime dialogue), (insert not fun to listen to, overdone chopped break, because yes, there is a difference between genuine choppage and technique and then just doing wayyyy too much, T_T, +admittedly, when i was first starting out i would say i was pretty guilty of this) which i have not only seen infect audiotool, but obviously the online space in general,
and now, a lot of people hear "drum and bass" and immediately think of this pseudo sound that does not match the absolute peak of creativity that drum and bass was known for basically up until the late 2000s, or likely before this resurgence i mentioned before. now don't even get me wrong, i love a whole bunch of new dnb artists, i'm not putting everybody/everything down, because some of them have their own sound (even here on at!!) that i can't help but be inspired, happy, or really proud of in a sort , (e.g. strxwberrymilk, one my fav more recent dnb artists.)
i hope people don't take it as me sounding like a total oldhead crybaby (lmao), talking about how dnb/jungle "isn't the same anymore," and "we need to bring the old sound back", because that's not the point i'm trying to make, and that would be utterly embarrassing as well as useless- because basically every genre in existence has those handful of people who already do that, from rnb, to screamo, to club, rave, you name it, literally any genre under the sun, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with genres evolving. it happens.
- plus, i would say, i am singlehandedly trying (emphasis on trying lol) to bring back the sound on my own instead sitting behind a desk and just complaining about it not coming back, when i could easily do it myself, which, again, i am trying.
i just hope somebody understands where i'm coming from, knows the culture like i do, and even better, more than i do, to not only work with, but hopefully try to resurrect this sound i so dearly love and hold close to my heart. thank you!
edit: now realising that this might start stuff, so if anyone does wanna talk im all about differing opinion! that's what makes us human, but spread peace, not hate, please.
honestly i fucking love the "ps1/atmospheric jungle" flavor that's popped up over the last few years, it's super nostalgic for me lol. It's always kind of been around but lately it's sort of turned into it's own subgenre and I'm here for it. And honestly, that's what jungle has always kind of been about imo - finding fun and creative ways to throw random shit over breaks and make it groovy.
i agree! as i said before, i still love the scene and can appreciate it entirely, my point (or want more like it) is to resurrect the darkside scene that has been almost entirely forgotten and overshadowed by its more popular brother of atmospheric/intelligent dnb. plus, if anything, imo, a lot of dark experimental jungle was a lot more creative in its sourcing and use of different samples and other techniques to make otherworldly melodies. i feel as if though intelligent/atmos is a lot more straightforward (nun wrong with that at all i still think it's fkin great :D), i think i'm jus a lot more attracted to the challenge that the original scene had/has to offer :9
i didnt know a single label or band u named (except strxwberrymilk and sewerslvt) but i definitely know id love their music cuz i love ur music. i wanna give em a listen at some point also if u wanna reach out more id suggest joining the audiotool discord (link is only visible to registered users) its fairly active
please reach out to
@Roy ↨
as there are very few people who are as interested in and invested in the old school jungle scene and he is definitely willing to talk your ass off about it
also, maybe not as relevant but notably mentioned here is that you're a fan of strxwberrymilk who Roy and I happen to be friends with. maybe it doesn't show in their own music but they are also a huge fan of the 90s scene for jungle and deep house
rgghhhhhh yes i love them,, but that's kinda the gist i'm trying to get people out of,,, listen to anthill mob's "black rushin" and 4hero's "students of the future" to get what i'm tryna put down :p
