Is trap as a genre equivalent to others, and why or why not?

Here's a place to discuss a rather common conversation topic.

My personal opinion is that pretty much are genres are equal. Sure, hiphop and trap beats can be simpler to make, but it can be just as complex and creative as the producer wants it to be. The reason why there seems to be so much 'bad trap' is just because of how popular the subgenre is.

Anyway, let's talk about it.

Every genre can be delicious. If made with effort and emotions. You can tell when the music tells a story. But when majority puts together a beat kick on 1 and 3 clap on 2 and 4, there is nothing much to expect.

A good example of how generic lofi with no effort is made, even says it takes no skill, makes me laugh.

All genres are the same. It's just that some people like others more than others. Or some circlejerk or claim to be the master race or something but in the end they are all genres. Also, small correction. Trap isn't a subgenre, it's one of the biggest genres out there.

I agree completely. Good music tells a story or creates a mood regardless of genre. Even with genres I dislike, I can tell that there's real passion and intent behind it. And yes, this lo-fi takes no effort guy got it wrong. Lo-fi just describes the technical quality of the production. It isn't polished or professional. But that says nothing about the -music- in it.

The term 'subgenre' doesn't refer to the size or popularity of a genre, it refers to a subcategory within a genre. In this case, hiphop is the parent genre.
Anyway, yeah, I agree!

Welp, I've always considered trap a different genre since it's become unique enough that it sounds much different. When I think subgenre I think of derivatives from the genre that are different but not far away from the parent. But if trap is a subgenre then it's a subgenre.

Make what you like to make. Popular genres get the short end of the stick, because they are overused, and because there's a lot of new Artists trying to make them.
