The included AT synths cover all the bases, but if you mean a hardware synth to record into Audiotool (once timeline recording and sample upload have been enabled), you could start with a Korg Volca. Keys or Bass are good starting synths.
Get a Gameboy and (lsdj or Arduinoboy).
Or almost anything from teenage engineering

get a midi keyboard with knobs/pads/wheels, so you can control soft synths physically. Unless you are getting a expensive hardware collection, software will be much better than any budget hardware which can do only basic things. I recommend arturia or akai controllers
100$ or Less: Portable midi controller with VSTS, Monotron, Circuit bend cheap Thrift shop toy keys, old used cheesy Yamaha/Casio keys, Walmart Pianos
200$-300$ Korg Volcas
300-500$ It starts to open up a little, there's a lot of entry level monophonic analogs, Korg Monologue, Arturia Minibrute, Novation Mininova, Microkorg, also have the Roland Boutiques, and Yamaha Refaces
