The current comment system is kinda wonky. Imagine if you want to comment on someone's reply on another comment. You have to reply to the original comment, and it notifies the original commentor. Also, the replies are ordered from newest to oldest. Why though?

Basically, we need threaded replies pls xoxo

I like the idea of having it newest to oldest, but only as preview. Take a look at youtube comments. they show the newest comments first, but if you click on "see more" you get comments which are oldest to newest.
This is what i expect.

TBH I always have a hard time figuring out how comments are ordered on youtube.

The problem with nested responses is that an ordinary discussion would result in a deeply nested tree. I don't think the benefit outweights the problems this would cause (design and usability). It would be nice if one could link to the post someone is replying to (maybe highlight in mouse over)
About the ordering: there are different benefits for both orders:

  • "Newest first" allows you to quickly continue a discussion where you're already participating or where one can deduce the context from the recent two messages. (which is fairly often the case)
  • "Oldest first" allows to reconstruct longer discussions easily.

That's what I'm saying, why not have both orders? Once a comment threshold is reached, it changes. But also an obvious change, maybe an arrow pointing which way to read, or a bolder "Read more" button.

Having both orders on a single page would be the worst of both worlds IMO.
I'd like to keep it as is, but I don't mind making it customizable.
