I am not speaking for any machine or system out there, but this is my personal fix for the problem.
There have been a lot of reports: when you open PROBE or if in any other way your projects page loses focus it freezes completely and crashes, I have been dealing with this unpleasant issue myself.

Go to chrome://settings/ scroll down, click on ADVANCED, keep scrolling down an look for System Tab. In the system, tab look for " Use hardware acceleration when available " disable this option and click on a relaunch button.

Once disabling this feature in Google Chrome, there are no issues with it at all.
Maybe you guys can bring in your 2 cents on why is that so, and maybe it can help users out there to not experience the crashing issues for now.

Thank you.
P.S sorry for the video quality, I did not revert back to normal recording settings on my recording software after some streams I was doing during low internet speed times while traveling.

This issue also fixes an issue when recording the browser window using OBS. Just putting this here so maybe you guys can find how to fix it more faster

Yes, it is, but siladozhd workaround fixed it for now.

@andremichelle Funny enough this issue is gone back in " blue " again.
I wanted to write an answer, so before that, I went to chrome settings and enabled Use Hard Drive acceleration when available option, opened a large project, minimized window, switched tabs, and it is not freezing anymore. Ehhh... It happened before as well. I remember when Ollie first posted this issue, I had it as well. https://www.audiotool.com/board/bug_reports/next_freezes_when
Then all of a sudden it disappeared on its own. And after some time it came back again. Actually, I even posted a comment in Ollie's topic again ( 4 months ago ) seems that this Bug is back again.
So this is a spooky one man! I have no idea what to say!

@trulsenstad @n6rjtkp @jordynth @oscarollie
Please go to chrome settings and now Re-enable the HD acceleration option, open any project and see does it freeze.

I still get the freeze.

2019-03-16 19:02 · 2019-03-16

@jordynth is your booster updated?

2019-03-16 19:06 · 2019-03-16

Yes, as far as I know. It updates automatically when I launch it.

2019-03-16 19:09 · 2019-03-16

Oh yes, I asked it because my machine is running 24/7 365 ON mode so I always have to restart booster to see whether it needs an update.

Well, what can I say, this is super weird. I cannot reproduce this anymore.

@andremichelle my answers:

  1. Google Chrome 73.0.3683.75 official build, 64 bits. (Google tested an earlier version on Linux)
  2. The time it takes to load a project, press play and stop and switch to another tab, approx. 30-40 seconds.
  3. Yes, it happens with only two tabs.
  4. Can't reach the login page because the website freezes as soon as I switch to its tab, which has the track/draft page loaded.

Note: The booster doesn't even change to "disconnected" after closing the app tab. It only changes after closing the whole Chrome program.

Like I said, I am not able to repro this anymore at all. I have no idea where it went. And interesting that @jordynth still has it.

Waiting on @trulsenstad to turn on HD acceleration and test.
There is nothing I can help with without not being able to repro this at the moment.

sorry, completely forgot about this. I'll test sometime today.

2019-03-26 14:20 · 2019-03-26

I just tested it and the problem is gone for me too. I can switch tabs with hardware acceleration option on and nothing freezes anymore. My current Chrome version is 73.0.3683.86, official build, 64 bits. It was updated automatically through my distribution updater I think two days ago . This might have solved the problem.

2019-03-26 14:50 · 2019-03-26

Whenever it comes back, I am sure it will just like in the past, will take action immediately.

2019-03-26 15:21 · 2019-03-26

Sorry, I posted too quickly. It still happens to me. It just takes longer to kick in. I was able to switch tabs with hardware acceleration on without a freeze for a while (about 3-5 minutes) then it froze again. I've tested a few times and the behaviour is very unpredictable. Sometimes the freeze happens right away, sometimes it takes anywhere between 10 seconds to 1-2 minutes to freeze on a tab change. Sometimes, right after activating hardware acceleration, tab switching is fine, then when closing the tabs and opening them again the problem will be back.

2019-03-26 18:52 · 2019-03-26

I tested some more. There seems to be a link between project size and bug likelihood. It doesn't happen with new projects or with existing projects of small or moderate size. As the size of the project increases (more devices and timeline content), changing tabs creates a temporary freeze that resolves in 1-3 seconds. Bigger projects trigger a seemingly permanent freeze. I'm not sure what the size threshold is, but I created a new project and started adding devices. Everything went fine until I had around 150 devices or so. I experienced the temporary freeze and then the total freeze. I'll post this in the Google forum.

I tried turning hardware acceleration back on and I no longer seem to have any issues. I'll update this if that should change.

2019-03-27 23:44 · 2019-03-27

Have you tried while working with a big project with lots of devices? For me project size seems to be what triggers the bug.
