They run automatically on pattern tracks. You can set them up to also use notetracks where each instrument is assigned a note.
Alternatively, you can keep the pattern track and right click the instrument - insert pattern track
Now you'll have a track on the timeline to insert these patterns.
Keep in mind that for drums to work using note or pattern tracks; if you have an active pattern selected, you must select an empty pattern on the drum machine in the dashboard. When you press play in the studio, the drum machine will play the active pattern selected on the drum machine immediately, regardless of what is in the timeline.
