In FL Studio, for example, it's pretty easy to match a sample to the current key along with fit to tempo. Can Audiotool do that? I don't think the playback (timestretch or pitch) is doing that as it's based on tempo alone. I know there are funky workarounds to change the pitch of a sample/loop, but this seems like a super basic thing that's missing.

I don't see the problem myself with those "funky workarounds", but yeah, now that you mention it, new options to change the sample's pitch might be a good idea after all.
You can stretch the sample while it's on pitch warp mode and resample it.
