Making a High-Gain style guitar distortion

I've recently dove deep into the capabilities of waveshapers and impulse response devices. My goal is for someone to get on audiotool with only a cheap guitar and be able to give it modern FX. The tubedrive and some smart OTT style effects are a nice start, but it's tough to get audiotool devices to really "chug" or bring out a pinch harmonic without a ton of noise in the signal. Or at least it's tough for me since I've never really gone too deep into this subject before.

So far a bandsplitter running into different combinations of tubes, eq's and waveshapers has got me pretty damn close! Some smart pre-distortion compression and gating also gets a more even sound, but I keep hitting this "crunch" sound more than a true metal distortion.

I know there's plenty of audiotool artists out there who can give me a giant studio session with a billion devices that will have the sound. But I'm trying to keep it somewhat chromebook friendly for the broke artist out there. If you got some ideas or examples I could try out, let me know! It would be a shame to have all of these pedal looking devices but no REAL guitar tone tools. This might become a series of templates in the future.
