Interview

I'm a 17 year old student/producer taking a Diploma for Music and Audio Technology in Singapore Polytechnic.

About Leo aka Icebox:
I'm a 17 year old student/producer taking a Diploma for Music and Audio Technology in Singapore Polytechnic. I've been on Audiotool for about one and a half years and my favourite style of music is mainly EDM and Future Bass, or any genre that can incorporate my vocals inside;)
Which artist has had the most influence on you (on and/or outside Audiotool)?
Outside of Audiotool? I'd say Porter Robinson and Illenium. Those 2 are my biggest inspirations. But inside of Audiotool? When I first started out, I was influenced a lot by Vulkron. I've always dreamed of becoming a renowned producer like him on the platform.
Who would you like to work/collaborate with on and outside Audiotool, and why?
In Audiotool, I would 100% want to collab with rai over all people. He's been my number 1 idol and although he doesn't have a particular influence over my style of music, I would really love to learn so much from him!
Which film/game would you like to produce the score for or contribute a song to?
If I could choose a film? I'd pick Passengers. I feel like the end credits song could have been a very nicely-fitting future bass song that would fit the vibe of the whole story even more. Futuristic sounds and hints of nostalgia.
Have you ever had a writer's block? If so, how did you deal with it and what do you recommend to your colleagues?
Yes, I have. Writer's block is very challenging to overcome, but my best advice would be to do absolutely nothing! You won't get anything done by forcing ideas out of your head. If you can't come up with anything, it's because you're not inspired. Carry on with life as usual, and wait for those magic little moments to come in. If you adopt patience, you'll produce quality over quantity;)
What has helped you the most on Audiotool to improve and widen your musical horizon?
My group of mentors, and friends from the community. From sim, to Fluent, to Velocistar, I've had many different people critique my work and even show me how to make it better. The community really helps in showing you different ways you can develop your skills.
What do you like most about Audiotool? Is there anything you would like to suggest?
I really love its "complex simplicity". In my opinion, the learning curve for Audiotool is much more shallow than most other DAWs, which will help you get the basics down immediately. But once you start experimenting you find out that although the devices are simple, you can do a lot more with the DAW than you originally expected when you test your creative limits and push its boundaries!
Your message to the community:
Help each other grow. It's what happened to me, and look where I am now! If you're an established producer, explore more genres and mingle with people to make friends, and learn production from each other. To those very experienced producers, help usher in a new generation of Audiotool artists that can help expand and develop this platform and make it known to all corners of the world! Remember, this DAW is only as strong as its community!
