About Otto Montgomery aka WPX

I was born in Detroit Michigan and have spent most of my life in New York. I've used Audiotool since I was around 9 or 10 (19 years old now).

Describe the style of music you produce

It could be described as acid or simply electronic music, with some experimental aspects. I enjoy the analogue synthesizer sounds and creating lush melodies and thick basses. Recently I've been compared to the likes of Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, etc. which is a huge honor for me since they were some of my main inspirations.

What is your musical background and when did you start making music?

I have no formal musical background or training. I started making loop based music at a very young age (8 i think?) on a website called ClubCreate. I can't remember the exact reason but the website had shut down for some copyright scam or something like that. I had to find an alternative to make my goofy dubstep loops and I found Audiotool. I was instantly hooked as I mixed and matched the loops. As a young Skrillex enthusiast it was addicting. As time went on I delved into more complex sample work and eventually synth stuff.

What is your favorite Audiotool device and why?

Besides the Pulv, I'm a big fan of the Helmholtz. For a lot of tracks its helped me bring out a really unique, phat color in my basses that I find addicting.

What is your favorite trick in AT/What technique do you always use?

Honestly nothing in particular comes to mind. I use relatively simple techniques to make my music and always have. I find that finding that using certain quieter synths as background layers to a main one can add a lot of depth and flavor to a sound that can't necessarily be replicated with effects pedals.

Have you ever had a writer's block? If so, how did you deal with it and what do you recommend to your colleagues?

I think trying your best to stay consistently creative is a difficult task. Don't be afraid to try something numerous times and fail, and always look for deeper meaning and inspiration in your own life. Sleep and dreams are important for creativity, so try to prioritize those. I think trying to force tracks out will never work, ultimately. The best ideas always come at random, I've noticed. if you're experiencing a block, give yourself time, give yourself rest , and surely something will come to you when you least expect it.

What has helped you the most on Audiotool to improve and widen your musical horizon?

I'm still learning each day, but just listening to other's tracks, even when their style is completely different from mine, gives me new perspectives, inspirations and ideas that I can implement into my own style. I'm genuinely inspired by a lot of people here.

What do you like most about Audiotool? Is there anything you would like to suggest?

I love the browser based aspect and the community of course. That's what makes AT special. I'm very grateful for the friends i've made here and hope to continue to use this site as long as possible.

Life is special. Although we are living in hectic times, we should be thankful we're fortunate enough to be able to make music on our laptops. But don't get too sucked into the digital world, getting outside into nature is equally important for your creativity!

Sila is my bro and the tracks he makes here are truly special. He has such a deep love for lofi house and you can see that love in his tracks. I love putting “brainworks” on while I am studying. He personally is my favorite here for dark experimental sounds.

SBZ/Tophat/Jace makes some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard. He finds a way to create the most organic atmospheres on this website. The percussion is always fantastic over lush and inspiring sounds. Big ups to him.

gentle breeze, night by An angel

An Angel / Jeffhargrave’s sounds have been classics in my mind for many many years. Although he is not very active any more, the stuff on his old account and new one strike me in a dark and pleasant way and always have. All of his tracks take me to Silent Hill, a dense fog that I can wallow in. I still have all of his band camp releases on my phone from years ago.

Track #5:

forest (no sample) by sea foam and the wind

Sea foam is an expert of sound design, and this track in particular I am very thankful for. I have meditated to this almost every day for over a year now, and every time I hear it my mind is reminded of peace. I just find it simply beautiful and so calming. Props to Sea Foam for his experimentation with sounds.
