If you're looking to widen a sound, don't use left/right delays. Use mid/side delays. Using a mid/side delay brings all the cancellation to the sum of the mid and side signals, and not to the individual signal signals themselves. You can modulate the delay time to get a chorus effect and a less robotic sound.
