Synthesizer gets louder when kick pattern ends.

Hello,

I am working on a song and when the kick pattern ends and only synthesizer Tb303 is playing, it gets louder. What to use to fix this? Should I put a compressor and if so, to which device?

Thanks.

  • Do you notice that difference in volume also when you solo your TB-303 (kick drum not audible)?

    • Unless you have applied side-chain compression using the kick to your 303, the volume of the 303 should be unaffected. Perhaps your audio levels are very hot (high) and when both instruments play together, you're saturating the channel (watch for mixer clip lights lighting up), which could sound like one sound is cancelling the other? Also, depending on the dominant frequencies of both sounds, the kick sound could be masking the 303 sound. Do you hear a drop in volume on the 303 if you change the kick sound to a different one? Also, if you're monitoring very loud, it could be a psycho-acoustic effect (your ears have a built-in dampening mechanism when sounds get too loud). Does it sound the same when you monitor at low levels?

    • When solo TB-303 is playing the volume is the same. Once Kick drum comes in play it seems like it suppresses the volume of the TB-303 and it gets low. The difference in the TB-303 volume is only when played with kick drum (gets high when Kick drum ends and then low again when kick drum starts).

Is it because it needs some additional configuration or it might be related to some effects used on the TB-303 such as Stereo Detune and Pulsar Delay?
