It will be interesting to see where the road takes him in the future. We wish him all the best for his recent birthday and a productive new year on Audiotool.
Interview
Lyonnel Combes Place: Lille, north of France near the Belgian border, but born in Lyon. Age: 41 while writing, 42 when it gets published... or 24, I don't remember... Job: Sales manager in a technical textiles company (tried to escape this business world for a while but my banker called me back...)
- Musical Style
- Hum, that is a f ... good question ... Do I have a style? Not sure. In fact, I just follow my inspiration, depending on what I listen to at the moment, and my mood. If you guys have a word to define my style, feel free to tell me :) ! Generally speaking I listen to all kinds of music, ranging from Rock (my roots), Pop, Reggae, Stoner, Electro, Folk, World, Trip-Hop to House, Garage, Metal (R.I.P. Lemmy...), Dub etc ... I guess my productions are a mix of all of that!
- Musical Background
- I played the trumpet for 5 years, drums, learned a bit of keyboard on my own, djembe, had two guitars but never took the time to even try to learn (still one standing in my room ...) I was in a Rock/Metal band in my college years as a drummer, but we never had a chance to really make something out of it. When I started high school, with sport, studying, a job to pay studies and music, I had to make a choice to save some time: that was music ... This has always been a real pain and something I regret. I still wonder how it could have turned out if I had made the choice to go on with music and try to make a living out of it ... Hey, I will never know :)
- Started making music
- As far as I remember, I always made noise with any kind of item I was able to grab! As a child I loved trying to reproduce on a keyboard the songs I heard on the radio. My first experience with electronic music was with Jean-Michel Jarre: he made a giant open-air gig in Lyon in 1986 (more than 800 000 people!!) and that was a blast! From then, I started making some "music" (awful 8 bit sounds) on my old Amstrad CPC 464 and my Amiga. Some rocky years later, I discovered 2 guys, Thomas and Guyman, during the 1991/92 new year's evening at a friend's in Paris, making some awesome sounds by mixing House/Techno with groovy Rocky/Disco basic stuffs and that was a second blast! I followed them for a while, from rave to gigs and parties, before I had to move back to Lyon for the Highschool in 1993. What I'm telling you about is the birth of Daft Punk, just before they signed up with Soma records.
- On Audiotool
- At the end of my studies, I discovered "Music", a videogame on Playstation that allowed you to mix 8 tracks of different one shot samples and beats, and I played it for hours!! (years?). That was my last experience with making music for 10 years. When one of my children started to play sax, added to the fact that I quit my job, the vibe came back and I looked for something I could play with on the web, remembering the "Music" game. And then I found Audiotool, I was instantly hooked, that was 2 years ago. I'm still here, despite a lack of time, and I can't imagine doing without it now. I made good friends here, that are also amazing producers! So, here is the occasion to thank the creators of this powerful app that made it possible: 1000 thanks guys!
- Message to the community
- Just follow your taste and inspiration, don't make music for being followed, make it for yourself. Of course, being listened to and liked by others is cool, but don't try to be anyone else: be yourself. Both inside and outside AT!
