Best Practices for using an Aux 1 or Aux 2?

I've seen some DAWs that use Buses that apply certain effects. I'm thinking that, in Audiotool-speak, these would be like the Aux1 or Aux2 on the Centroid mixer. Is that correct?

Is it better to apply plugins before the mixer, during Aux, or after Aux before final output?

Please share some examples.

  • Usually you would use Aux 1 and 2 to apply effects that should affect more than one sound simultaneously. Reverbs and delays are good examples. If your effect is meant to affect one sound only, you could consider it part of the sound design of that particular voice and just add it to the signal chain before it hits the mixer. If your effect is meant to affect the whole mix, like in mastering (EQ, compression, exciter), you'd insert them after the master output. A less obvious use of Aux 1 and 2 is to add two more instruments to your mix (using Aux In), so you have 18 channels. If you do this, you have to connect something to the Aux Out as well (anything will work), because there's a bug in the DSP that prevents you from hearing anything coming from Aux In unless Aux Out is also connected. You could also connect Aux 1 Out to Aux 2 In and create feedback loops (be careful).

  • The way I use the Aux on the Centroid varies with the sound I'm sending through it.

For chords, leads, and other melodic sounds, I use:

    - Reverb

    - Delay

    - Stereo Detune

    - Stereo Enhancer

    - Slope

    - Compressor

    For bass sounds, I use:

    - Distortion

    - Exciter

    - Slope

    - Compressor

Stuff like sub, noise, and effect sounds are not put through the aux in my tracks.

I keep my Aux effects very subtle, as I already put all of these effects, and more on my sounds. For me it makes the master sound a lot better, but this may vary for you. My track Through the Tide and the Skies (Classic) uses effects on both the base sound, and the aux.

This is what I do, personally. It is by no means better than what anyone else does, and I recommend you listen to other opinions along with mine, as mine may not be super reliable.

  • Check out my 'Offline' template, it uses reverb and delay pedals on the aux

  • ditto on the use of multiple centroids.

there are also aux sends on the minimixer.

  • I mostly use a delay followed with a stereo enhancer on the aux. Also i use a reverb with a chorus and stereo enhancer on the other aux. I mostly use more then 1 centroid (one for drums, one for synths) with different devices.

  • i use reverbs, bit crushing, distortion etc. in the aux sends sometimes. reverb in there is great to not drown the mix too much, but still add that room.

Other times, I use parallel compression in the aux sends.
