How do you make a kick sound professional and not tinny when played on a stereo

  • First, find the best sample or samples you possibly can. It can take a while to audition everything but it's worth it. Then layer: add two or three samples that give you good sounds for the attack and the sustain part of the sound, or the high, mid and low end. Filter out what you don't need from each sample so that the result is clean. Use EQ and saturation/distortion to augment the kick. Use side-chain compression triggered by the kick on other low end sounds to make space for it. If you have an example or reference track of what you're trying to achieve, post it here.
