Desdemona is one of the small, inner moons of Uranus. It was discovered on Jan. 13, 1986 in images taken by Voyager 2. Little is known about Desdemona other than its size and orbital characteristics. It is named after the wife of Othello in William Shakespeare's play, "Othello, the Moor of Venice." Desdemona measures approximately 90 × 54 × 54 km and has a mean radius of 34 ± 4 km. Its surface area is estimated to be around 14,500 km². Desdemona belongs to the Portia Group of satellites, which includes other moons such as Bianca, Cressida, Juliet, Portia, Rosalind, Cupid, Belinda, and Perdita. The moons in this group have similar orbits and photometric properties. As for Desdemona, virtually nothing is known except its orbit, size, and geometric albedo of 0.08 . In images captured by Voyager 2, Desdemona appears as an elongated object with a grey surface color. It is projected that Desdemona may collide with one of its neighboring moons, Cressida or Juliet, within the next 100 million years.
