I wrote this WHOLE thing and got the “oopsie daisy” pop-up, deleting all my work -_- audiotool, make the word count longer. Here are my thoughts on the new VST update pertaining to recording vocals.
Monitoring vocals is not available. For some artists, testing effects in a vocal chain is imperative to a conductive workflow, helping ensure appropriate vocal delivery. In the new DAW its not an option (or at least from what I can see).
VSTs don't save (kinda). After adjusting VSTs on my mixing chain, I’ll hit the save button, only to be hit with a DAW crash and all of my work undone. Frustrating. I tested this again, saving the vocal chain and exiting the DAW on my own accord, to once again find that my VST mixes were not saved. I'm not sure if it's a bridge issue or what, but it makes utilizing the tools for mixing vocals very difficult.
Recording lead vocals is difficult, but recording backing vocals is impossible. In order to make a backing track, you have to duplicate the lead vocal (and re-do all of the settings) and pray that your work saves. Spoiler alert, it doesn't. Re-doing all of the effects on every vocal you record is just not a feasible workflow option, especially when 5 recorded vocal tracks is the minimum for most pop songs.
Latency is confusing, so I won't dive too deep into it. Occasionally, a vocal take will be perfectly in time, and other times it'll be out of synch. It's not the end of the world; using a cutting tool and nudging the vocals over slightly is a quick fix, but I just wish I knew what the cause of the issue was.
I was excited at the possibility of being able to adjust my workflow and integrate it into the DAW I use the most for production. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening quite yet. I’m well aware that this is meant for producers, but in order to compete with other DAWs like BandLab, Soundtrap, and GarageBand, making a vocal-friendly interface is imperative. I look forward to any and all updates and thank the people at Audiotool for their hard work so far.
Sorry about the "oopsie daisy", that's really annoying. Thanks for taking the time to write it all up a second time.
Quick rundown on your points:
VSTs not saving: Top priority, actively being fixed and released soon. It looks like the save isn't fully landing on our servers before the tab closes. We're making save confirmation reliable and improving error messaging so you're not left guessing. First fixes going out soon.
Backing vocals: Largely a downstream symptom of the save bug. Once that's fixed, duplicating tracks with their effect chain should work the way you'd expect.
Recording latency: On the list, part of ongoing VST Bridge work.
This one will take longer and we want to be upfront about it. It's not in scope for the current beta, but planned for the medium term. It needs proper, careful groundwork, something we don't take lightly.
