    I looked up 'tartyp' and all the results are either in French, or they go way over my head! As far as I can tell, it's some bloke's way of classifying sounds?

      Yeah it's French! It's this influential electroacoustic fella called Pierre Schaeffer's attempt at classifying every sound in existence. These are a few sounds that fit into different parts of his table (Tableau Récapitulatif de la Typologie) :)
