What kind of things are involved when you're using Audiotool?

Hi guys, we had this really insightful discussion about the whole motivation of using AT lately, so I thought I'd give it another shot and open up a new thread about a thing I'm curious about: How do you guys use Audiotool? What kind of things are involved? I hereby refer to all kinds of "things" in the broadest sense, meaning tangible things like for example desktop computers or laptops, MIDI controllers, interfaces, speakers or headphones, other musical instruments to put in for recording, microphones for sampling and so on... But I also refer to digital things like software for example to edit recorded samples before uploading to AT, virtual musical instruments to record audio, Audio or MIDI-Loops to import, audio converters and so on... As I said in the other thread, my interest relies on being a passionate musician (in the middle of my first collab on AT :) ) doing a music research project about collaborative music making on the internet. Really impressed by the things you can do here and the openness and kindfulness of the community, I really wanna learn how you do what you and get a better understanding of everything, that's why I'm asking. Anyway, really curious what you're coming up with! Best Maurice

  • MSI computer, AKAI keyboard, bose headphones. That's all I got lol

  • We use an iPhone 4 from 2010 as our main recording device. And we use a Yamaha EZ-220 as keyboard, which we connect to our producing pc (Acer Aspire SA90) with a midi-to-usb cable.

When we are making a track we mainly use TubeDistortions and Reverb.

    Thats it i guess.

  • I have a notation launchkey and I love it, but i cant seem to find a way to get around the input latence on AT. It makes recording a bit of a pain.

  • I have an HP laptop, a pair of Audio Technicas, and an AKAI Mpk Mini. I normally only use the midi controller for making random chords to get inspiration and then writing them down in a note track, (or recording it live). I advise most people looking for headphones to get Audio Technica headphones, as they allow for top-notch sound quality, and let you hear literally every detail in every sound.

    • @etterath Thanks and sorry for the late reply! Do you play random chords in the app first or in another software to get inspiration? Refering to the latency issues mentioned before by using midi controllers. Can you specify how "writing them down" works and how you decide when to record live or writing it down?

An HP Envy notebook with a touchscreen and Sony headphones. I don't have a midi keyboard nor any fancy MIDI device aka Launchpad because I'm poor as hecc; I am sometimes tempted to buy a Launchpad (because of the pretty colors), though.

    • @Last Minut35 Really good answer, thanks :D Do you actually use the touchscreen for anything? How would you integrate a launchpad in your setup and how would you use it?

  • My Laptop, a Sennheiser HD-25 1, sometimes a Nektar IMPACT LX 25 Midi Controller Keyboard and half a liter of spicy hand-roasted coffee

    • What coffee do you drink?

    • @Snadbrugen sorry for getting back so late, what do you mean by a track that is more a session? How does that differ from a regular track that is not a session?

    • I only use it for filter movements and stuff, when I make a track which is more a sessions. But the latency is much better in next than it was in the flash app.

I usually start with the production of a track at 11pm and end around 5 a.m. so because of the time on one side but I like drinking good coffee anyways

  • As far as hardware goes:

I generally use my Acer Swift 5 running Windows 10 and my headphones, either sivga sv007s if I'm at home, or KZ-ED9's

(earbuds) if I'm away from my house. That's it. Soemtimes I use my stereo instead of headphones, but that isn't considered good practice, I'm just broke AF and can't afford studio monitors at the moment. I do have a midi keyboard, but the latency is abominable and renders such a settup practically unusable.

    • @HEXsiX Answering board topics is an interesting point aswell: do you do that on a regular basis or just by times? Are there many people from the AT community commenting on board topics or is it just a small portion? How important is it to engage in board topics aswell to be part of the community?

Back to midi, when you generate midi files with FL or Caustic, do you play it there or do you write it in the editor by clicking the notes and import it then to the app? What about latency issues with the app, is that a problem?

    • @s_maurice

I normally check my profile only. I can't even figure out how to listen to tracks on my mobile device, but I think that's just an issue with Puffin Browser. I do sometimes use my phone to comment on board topics, though.

Sometimes I choose to use a stereo instead of headphones because headphones can be fatiguing to listen to sometimes, especially after long listening sessions. Generally, I only use the stereo while composing. While mixing and mastering I might reference the stereo to make sure it sounds good on consumer devices, but I use the SV007's as my main mixing headphones (they don't have a flat sound signature either, but they are detailed and I've gotten used to the sound).

As far as midi goes, I don't normally have to play out the lines. It's definitely more convenient that way, but I can figure it out without the keyboard if I have to. If I want to put down a more complex melody, I can generate a .midi file using Caustic 3 or FL studio and import it into the app. Besides, I don't normally make full blown melodies for my tracks. I'm more into techno inspired stuff, which relies more on shorter patterns that don't necessarily need to be programmed with a keyboard.

    • @HEXsiX Got it, thanks! Are you just checking your profile on the go or are you actually listening, writing on other people's walls and stuff aswell?

What makes you sometimes choose a stereo then as you do have good headphones at home?

Audio latency is a pretty interesting point! Didn't think that it would be too much to be playable. How do you play the lines you would probably normally play with your midi keyboard then?

  • I just use my two years-old HP laptop paired with some good quality headphones (Urbanista New York). That's all. Although I may buy a midi keyboard soon. Pretty poor set up, ig, but the great thing about AT is that you don't really need much more.

    • Thanks! What makes you think about buying a MIDI keyboard? What would you need it for? What about browsing profiles on the go, you do that aswell or just from your HP?

  • At first I mostly used my computer at work during the weekends, which was like... this old windows XP computer. Lately I use a mix of FL Studio and Audiotool at home. I may make a couple things like a bassline or a piano using VSTS, and then import into Audiotool and build from there. I have a bunch of hardware, but I really only end up using my Yamaha HS8 monitors for playback, and plain old keyboard and mouse.

    • @Infyuthsion Thanks mate! So you were using AT while you were at work? What did your colleagues say about that? What computer are you using at home?

Why do you use other VSTs instead of sticking to what you have in AT? You could aswell make a bassline using the instrument here - what's the reason you sometimes prefer to use other software?

What do you mean by "bunch of hardware" and why are you not using it for AT?

Are you browsing AT profiles, listening to tracks etc on the go aswell or only from home?

  • Right, umm...

I use a school-issued hp Chromebook, with a random hp mouse I found in a desk drawer, and some generic iPhone 7 under earbuds... though sometimes I'll be using an iMac with an apple mouse and the same earbuds... and even more rarely, I'll be using a windows HP computer with windows 10... Very rarely, when I want to record a sample, I'll use a Wii microphone that plugs into my chromebook... I don't really use anything else.

    • Well, the iMac is my school's - i enter into a larger draft here when I can't work on it well on the Chromebook. The HP is simply my home computer, and I use audiotool on that for no particular reason at all other than the fact that I'm not near my chromebook.

As for the order, it's just the order I wrote them down in. I will typically check my profile and stuff on a Samsung Galaxy tab 4 NOOK, but will occasionally use an iPhone 8 Plus.

    • Thanks Lumin, if I get this right, you're mostly using the Chromebook, after that the iMac followed by the Win10 HP - why is that and why in that order?

If I get this right, you cannot use the AT app on mobile devices, but what about browsing profiles, the forum and listening to tracks? Are you doing this from other devices aswell?
