I guess I'll explain Yu-Gi-Oh's New Rules. Monsters, spells and traps are basic. Monsters who are level 4 or lower (level is indicated by stars beneath the card's name) can be summoned without tribute. Monsters level 5 and 6 need 1 tribute (destroying monsters to summon new ones) to be summoned, while levels 7 or higher need 2 tributes(excluding egyptian gods and wicked beasts, who need 3, and Exodia The Legendary Defender, who needs 5).
Standard Spells can be played during your turn, during your main phases, and are sent to the graveyard once their effect is over. Other types of spells include continuous spells, which stay on the field until destroyed or the end of the duel, field spells, spells that are like continuous spells, except placed in a different location, quick spells, which can be played during either player's turn, Equip Spells, which are equipped to monsters to strengthen or weaken them, and Ritual spells, used to summon Ritual Monsters.
There are 3 main types of trap cards, normal, continuous and counter. All can only be played during opponent's turn when a certain action is made, or 1 turn after they are set. They cannot be activated right away from your hand. Normal traps act, well, normally. Continuous traps are like continuous spells, staying on the field indefinitely until destroyed or the end of the duel, and counter traps can be used to negate or destroy effects of other cards.
There are multiple types of monsters. Among these are Normal, Effect, Ritual, Pendulum, Fusion, Synchro, XYZ, and Link. Normal monsters are light brown and don't have any unique effects. Effect monsters are brown and have effects that help benefit you or harm your enemy.
Ritual monsters are blue in color and are used in the main deck. They need Ritual spells to be summoned. Usually you need to tribute monsters whose levels meet or exceed the level of the ritual monster from your hand or field to summon them. Fusion monsters are a slightly darker purple than trap cards and belong in the extra deck, a deck that goes on the opposite side of the field of the normal deck. They also have their own unique cards used to summon them. Fusion monsters have requirements on the cards that you need to have in order to fusion summon them.
Synchro monsters are white in color, and go in the extra deck. Like fusion monsters, they have their own monster specifications for summoning. Unlike Fusion monsters, they do not need a spell or trap to be summoned(usually). Synchro monsters need 1 "Tuner" monster (card will specify if it is a tuner) and 1 or more other cards to be summoned, and the specified cards' levels need to exactly reach that of the level of the Synchro monster.
XYZ Monsters are black in color and go in the extra deck. Again, XYZ monsters need specified cards to be summoned. Most of the time, these cards are usually 2 or more monsters of the same level as the XYZ monster's rank, which is almost exactly the same as level. The monsters used for the XYZ summon are not sent to the graveyard, but rather placed underneath the summoned XYZ monsters, which are then on referred to as XYZ materials.
Link Monsters are blue in color, and are placed in the extra deck. Link monsters can be summoned through specification of the card, and have multiple differences from normal monsters. Link monsters do not have DEF and therefore cannot switch battle position. Instead, they have a link rating, a number that is used to determine the strength of the link monster. the link rating also acts as a number that can help summon other link monsters. Let's say that I have a LINK 2 monster on the field, as well as 2 other monsters. The Link 2 monster can be used as 2 monsters to help link summon a LINK 4 monster, along with the other two monsters.
And Lastly, the most confusing of them all... Deep, exasperated sigh Pendulum Monsters. Pendulum monsters are effectively half monster, half spell card, In both appearance and effect. Pendulum monsters can either be summoned as your run of the mill monster or be placed in the spell/trap zone. Pendulum monster have a Pendulum Scale that is a number between 1 and 12. These will set the boundary for the level of monsters that you can summon.
By placing two Pendulum monsters on either side of your spell/trap zone face up, you can summon just about as many monsters from your hand whose levels are within the boundaries of the pendulum scale that you made. This can be incredibly broken if used correctly. An example, you have Aether the Evil Impowering Dragon, a Pendulum scale 4 monster, Kai-Do Kendo Spirit, a Pendulum scale 9 monster, 3 blue eyes white dragons and Polymerization. To Pendulum summon, you can place Aether and Kai-Do on either side of your spell/trap zones. Now through that, becuase those 3 blue eyes are within levels 4 and 9, you can summon all three. Now you could use Polymerization to Summon Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon. Now You see how broken this is?
Another thing, other monsters from the extra deck can be pendulum monsters. Fusion, Synchro, and XYZ monsters can all be part pendulum monster, which I can't even explain.
