I like percussive variations too but sometimes they are better lest simple. Especially with sporadic melodies. I think this track needs a steady beat to carry on the cool sounds. In my opinion this track never finds it's place. Choose 1 or 2 of your best beats and layer them within this track and I think the response will be better.
It's just a example of a track can be a simple combination of samples with a good percussive variations. Conventional maybe... But without being too repetitive....

Most of my tracks do not have that repetitive beat ... long-term ... I always try to make variations on percussion and melodic lines. I use loops, but always seeking innovative combinations.
