Many protected and endangered predators die every year from secondary poisoning after eating a rat that has eaten rat poison. If there were as many predators as there should be, there would be fewer rats. Rats are intelligent, clean, social and empathetic. The plague was not transmitted by rats but by fleas on them, just like on other mammals.
