In my opinion what makes a good synthwave song is a groove that has that "vibe." You gotta think about how to grab the listeners attention them move them emotionally whether its a melodic line, groovy bass, or harmonically rich pads. You can use simple or advanced chords as long as the rythm is "easy to listen to" if that makes sense. Another analogy I like to think about is a story with an arch with a beginning, clamax, and ending.
