while the main line goes up, others go down. when a line is a holding a note have another voice moving and vice versa. also try harmonizing the line makes it pretty :P thats what ive been told and have proven (to an extent) that works. have the mood in the song in mind in choosing what percussion you want and try not to use other peoples presets and I only use samples for buildups and vocals sometimes not even build ups and I never do that with a melody either. good luck.
AHH ok :) well when having a melody come up with a key signature and a chord progression that, to you, sounds good. now for the melody watch accidentals and for held notes always try for root or the fifth maybe third if your limited. but I mean just have cool rhthyms in mind and the shape of the melodic line in mind. how do you do that? (YOU ARE A MUSICIAN!) when you come up with a melody you like write a counter melody.
