percussion in boombap is always difficult to get right. I'd say to run the drums through a separate mix and give them some fuzz with a little bit of record static (or any fitting analogue artifact). I sometimes dig through samples for hours when I'm producing oldhead style.
all in all, you did great for trying out such a different sound!
