Publishing to hear feedback and to listen away from computer. Just an in-progress idea for a trance track.

  • With this sort of sound, you typically want the pumping effect from your sidechain compression to have fairly precise timing. Usually, you want the suppression of the signal to end right around the start of the next beat. Where it lands affects the groove, so a little early can sound forward moving and frenetic while a little late can sound powerful and relaxed. Too early, though, and it just sounds out of rhythm.

    • It doesn't really matter if you automate volume or if you use a compressor, the important part is the rhythm and its effect of overall impression. It currently sounds a little long for a simple duck but a little short for a pumping effect.

    • I didn't use a compressor for the sidechaining. Would that have been better?

    • Do you think the ducking sounds too early or late?
