In my opinion, the problem with your original was that you created a cool baseline and then added more instruments that play exactly the same notes. This makes it sound too monotonous overall.
I always try to create a counter melody that doesn't echo the main melody or baseline, but plays different notes that fit harmoniously.
You can vary the drums to add more variety, and effects always help.
