and yeah I expected you to resolve eventually to Db minor or major so pivoting instead with the Eb chord was cool as well to get to Ab, takes you on a trip nice trip. and yeah hahahaha pedal tones are definitely convenient, truly the modern jazz way of voice leading to anywhere lol

I got the drum pad probably around 5 or so years ago now, it's the DD-65 yamaha drum pad, it's decent except for the foot pedals, they're just buttons so it's hard to develop good foot technique with them and they're not as responsive as I'd like

eeee im glad you dig the harmony!! rarely get to geek out about theory here :) i knew i wanted to end up at Ab somehow, using the A and E lydian sonorities as a phrygian cadence type beat. the Bbm and Fm are like a sneaky way of getting to E while also hinting at the eventual Ab resolution. there are a bunch of ways to think abt it but really everything works if you have a pedal tone lmao

oh i totally feel you on the 5+3! didn't think abt that. and i'd love to be of any help if i can! i typically record everything in reaper anyways so it wouldn't be any trouble to get you that in ableton :) i'm moving in about a week and hoping to have a better recording setup once i'm there. i've actually been looking into drum pads recently. what model do you have and how has it been working for you?

also one more thing, I like what you did harmonically in the first part a lot. The resolution to Bbmin7 through modal interchange and then sitting on the Fmin7 before slipping back down into Emaj7 is really satisfying to my ear

as for the candombe significance, i wish i could relate but im not familiar with uruguayan culture and rhythms. from my layman standpoint i like this 3-2-3 cuz of the jagged 5+3 feel, definitely feels more syncopated and interesting than tresillo which im much more used to

bout the 323, i'm honestly not sure if it has a name? i do definitely see the relation w tresillo! i'm uruguayan and grew up with a lot of candombe music & drumming. i think for this groove i was (subconsciously) putting in a little of that, especially in the way that the repique part plays around the madera. also candombe tends to be a little more rhythmically open than many other afro-cuban diaspora musics, and to me the 323 tresillo captures that? thanks for asking, i <3 talking rhythm!
