For your first try, this is awesome!
Critique time: The first bass at took me by surprise, the sound design is not bad! I like gritty basses, but it sounds like it is more high-heavy and lacks some mid frequencies. More vowel development would help shape the bass's sound a lot more. The high pitched wobble bass at Is pretty nice, but it sounds like it needs more distortion, it lacks the energy that your other bass has.
Exciters can be good starters for shaping vowels, but make sure you are just automating the freq knob. A big part of vowel shaping is the curve EQ. Mess around with it, and see what you come up with. ;)
Yeah, basses on their own shouldn't have any low-end frequencies, that will clash with a sub, or if you're not wanting to have a sub, it won't be a clean one or sound very good in general. High-passing everything will just keep the high-end and maybe some mid-range frequencies, depending on how highpassed everything is.
The wobbly bass doesn't sound like it has any peaking frequencies, just needs more effects! Something else I noticed is that at certain points like at , , and the volume gets louder. I'm not sure if that's an accident with a possible volume automation or if you accidentally placed 2 notes in the same spot on the piano roll. Might want to check for that. This is really nice Dubstep.
I cant fully help you as im still a noob but if you want I can teach you a couple things that vulky boi taught me. Just post on my wall and inv me to a draft whenever you need help.
