Try adding lots of distortion pedals in a line, with the drive all the way up, then add a compressor at the end. That'd give the distortion, but let the other sounds come through too :)
I couldn't figure out how to get the kick to the distortion level that i'd like without drowning out all of my other sounds, and blowing my speakers out.
