The Gate stompbox acts kinda like a reverse compressor. If a sound doesn't reach the threshold of the loudness you dial in with the threshold knob, it completely mutes it. That is if you have a sample with background noise for example, or a long tail that is quieter than the peaks of a sound, no audio will be let through the "gate" unless it reaches that threshold loudness. You can kinda isolate and shape either transients or the tail that way too.
