cranked this out in a little over an hour - might come back to fix the intro a little, as well as a few minor edits here and there.

So I saw your "rant" earlier: I wouldn't say this sounded like a total beginner made it, but it does sound like it was made in an hour by a non-pro. The main bass sounds super basic and kind of bland. The synth playing the melody at however sounds cool. None of the drums really sound processed in anyway, particulalry the main snare which sounds like a standard snare with some reverb thrown on. What I would do is tighten it up so it slaps harder by compressing it, or, create a longer tail

To try to break the cycle, I'm going to try to make some edits to this track, maybe later today and see what I can do. It'll be start at least

I rarely come back to stuff once it's out there; I'm terrible for it. Sometimes I just can't find the energy to make the edits necessary. This is why I try to take time doing all of that within the initial draft and only release something when I feel it can't be made better (by me) or is how I want it to sound (experiments aside) I've sent some stuff to artists for critique a couple of times; not had the response you did, but usually get ignored. Two however gave good feedback, so there's that

Jan 22, 21

Still though, I am in the very early stages of music making and I know that any criticism is helpful. I know that I have a very, very large amount of knowledge and info to learn, and I'm going to take the time to do that. In some ways, maybe I am still a beginner, and that's alright too. But I'm going to take your advice to start processing the overall sounds more and experiment with that, and hopefully I'll begin to improve. Again, thank you @callycus. I really appreciate it.

In terms of your mixing/mastering advice, thank you. That has been one of my biggest weak points since I started making music. When I make something I think sounds good, I often hesitate making major mixing changes because I am very indecisive and overthink how things sound, and usually end up scrapping songs completely because I feel that I have worsened them. I never came back to this song for that concern.

Also, before I respond to your technical advice, it's worth noting that the criticism didn't regard mixing or mastering or processing sounds, it was essentially saying the the integral structure of my song was bad and irreparable. There wasn't really any constructive nature to it. But again, this is definitely something I should've been more prepared to hear.

First off, thanks for saying this. It is something I needed to hear. I'll admit my rant might've seemed over the top at the time, but I had strong feelings in the moment. I also understand that I should've been a bit more prepared to receive criticism when submitting my music in an instance like that. I definitely don't consider myself a professional, one of the reasons why it sounded like it was made by an amateur in an hour is because well, that's exactly what happened.

Don't give up on an artist that gave you poor feedback; prove them wrong.

thus creating more fade away. using a aux send on all the drums with a reverb, probably chorus, and some compression will also put all of the drums in the same "room" which pulls things together more. For bass, I've started adding more harmonics to basses so I can play them at lower frequencies, but also give listeners something they can hear on bad speakers. It also tends to create a fuller sounding bass and can easily lead to some interesting sounds.
