I don't think that you should take mixing that seriously when you yourself got used to the aspects of the sound you wanted to change before. If you want to understand you should simply just mess with knobs and numbers until the end product sounds appealing to you. After that you'll start to understand what everything does.

It only took me a few years, I'd say once I got used to Audiotool I was able to put the whole puzzle together very quickly
